My Child is Nearsighted - Now What Do I Do?

We often get approached by patients seeking a second opinion on what to do with their child who’s prescription is getting worse and worse every single year. Myopia or nearsightedness - as some people call it - is an epidemic these days because of extended computer use. The average adolescent spends 6 hours a day or more looking at screens - which is a lot more than our forefathers did. Because of this, by 2040, which isn’t too far away from now, half the world's population will be nearsighted. There are lots of wonderful nearsighted opportunities to halt the progression and use the latest treatment technologies to help this epidemic.

Orthokeratology with CRT

Orthokeratology, or "ortho-k," is a method of reshaping the eyes with the use of specially-designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses. With ortho-k, the surface of the eye is flattened, thereby correcting mild to moderate amount of nearsightedness and astigmatism. Ortho K, which is a form of myopia control, is recommended by eye doctors to reduce the risk of eye disease when your child gets older. Ortho K lenses are only worn at night, where they gently shape your eye, leaving you with excellent vision during the day, without needing to wear glasses or contact lenses. Visit our Orthokeratology with CRT page to learn more.

We diagnose and treat Presbyopia at Forsight Vision. Pediatric Eye Exams

Studies show 80% of learning is visual. The common misconception is that if your child does not need glasses, they are not one of the 20%. The truth is that there are 17 tasks used on a daily basis, 11 of those are used when reading. If a child passes their vision screening but has trouble with tracking or any of the other 17 tasks, they will experience difficulty in the classroom and socially. To ensure your children’s visual resources, we recommend a developmental eye exam for children aged, 3, 6, and annually after that (bi-annually if they do not wear glasses). Visit our Pediatric Eye Exams page to learn more.
