What Is a Stye?

A stye (or hordeolum) is a red, swollen bump forming along the eyelid's edge or underside. It results from a bacterial infection in one of the eyelid’s oil glands or hair follicles. While most styes are not serious, they can cause significant discomfort, affect your vision, and even lead to further complications if not properly treated.

Sometimes, a stye that does not fully drain or heal may develop into a chalazion—a firmer, non-infectious lump caused by a blocked oil gland. While not the same as a stye, chalazia have a link and may require further treatment.

How Do Styes Develop?

Styes form when bacteria—often Staphylococcus aureus—infect a blocked meibomian gland or eyelash follicle. This blockage causes inflammation and the build-up of debris or pus inside the lid. There are two main types:

eye icon
External styes:

Appear on the outer edge of the eyelid,
typically at the base of an eyelash

eye icon
Internal styes:

Form deeper inside the lid, often caused by
clogged meibomian glands

You may be more prone to styes if you:

  • Rub your eyes frequently
  • Use expired or contaminated eye makeup
  • Have chronic lid inflammation like blepharitis
  • Struggle with poor eyelid hygiene or meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)

Common Symptoms of a Stye

Styes usually develop quickly and worsen over 24–48 hours. If you notice any of the following, we recommend scheduling an evaluation:

  • Localized swelling or tenderness
  • Watering, irritation, or discharge from the eye
  • Sensitivity to light
  • A gritty, scratchy feeling in the eye.

Early treatment helps reduce pain, minimize swelling, and prevent recurrence or complications like chalazia.

Advanced Technology for Accurate Diagnosis

Before treating a stye, we use high-precision imaging to understand what’s causing the problem and its severity.

Our diagnostic process includes:

  • Slit lamp examination: Magnified view of the lid and lash margin
  • External photography: High-resolution tracking of lesion development and response
  • Meibography: Imaging of the oil glands to detect MGD and prevent future styes

Our technology allows us to differentiate between styes, chalazia, cysts, and other lid abnormalities. This ensures you get the proper treatment from the very start.
